An innovation: the engine
The motorization of boats allowed more regular operation than sails. It enabled them to reach more distant shoals of fish and return faster to the port, where the first loads were generally sold at better prices. What gave them entirely new power was that, as well as providing propulsion, engines also powered mechanical apparatus: winches, capstans, electrical equipment, dynamos, alternators and hydraulic equipment.
Another innovation: the bridge
The installation of engines brought about a change of scale that led to the ship’s control and operation systems being centralised in a command centre: the bridge.
It contains the navigation instruments and the control equipment, including for the machinery, pumps, winches, etc.
